2. Defense competes well enough against division rivals

Without question, the impact made on offense will play a major factor in whether the Bengals can emerge as serious contenders in the AFC once again, but also the defense will have quite the work cut out for them as well.

Believe it or not, the AFC North is all of a sudden stacked with high-powered offenses since the Pittsburgh Steelers, Cleveland Browns, and Baltimore Ravens all seem capable of winning the division in 2019.

Normally, the Steelers are always strong candidates to finish on top of the AFC North at the start of each season, and even though Antonio Brown is no longer part of the picture, sleeping on Pittsburgh could backfire in a big way for any team.

As for the Browns and Ravens, well both Baker Mayfield and Lamar Jackson ended up making stronger impacts than originally expected as rookies in 2018 with expectations reaching new levels for each youngster heading into their sophomore campaigns.

When taking all of this into consideration, it’s easy to understand the work the Bengals’ defense has cut out for them heading into 2019, because if they can’t compete within their own division, how are they going to have any shot at reaching the Super Bowl?
