Can wide receiver Cam Sims really be a difference-maker for the Washington Redskins in the 2019 season? There’s no reason to think he can’t.
Overhyping players — particularly in training camp — can be a tiresome exercise. Every year, Washington Redskins fans fall in love with players, specifically at the wide receiver position, and claim they’re going to be the guy to finally break out. Then, those players inevitably seem to let them down, be that because of not making the final cut or otherwise.
Cam Sims, however, is different. The wide receiver was undrafted out of Alabama in 2018 and fans fell in love with him. That part isn’t different, but the skill that the young pass-catcher possesses most definitely is.
Sims didn’t record a catch last year but he made it to another training camp. He did so with a much higher chance of playing in 2019. Sims has the size (6-5) and athleticism allows him to make catches many others can’t. He’s showing that skill quite a bit this training camp. Sims has been impressing nearly everyone so far. That’s been highlighted by a number of plays.
Basically, Sims is making plays daily that analysts find worthy of sharing with the world. You could argue it’s just training camp and there’s a little truth to that. However, training camp is where players like Sims can make a name for themselves. It’s not like random undrafted players get a chance in the regular season without proving themselves in the offseason and preseason.

The Washington Redskins don’t have a stellar wide receiver corps. Trey Quinn is going to be a great slot receiver. Terry McLaurin is exciting and has potential through the roof. Kelvin Harmon deserves a lot of hype as well.
However, none of them have proven themselves in the NFL. Meanwhile, Josh Doctson has had a chance to prove himself and hasn’t, while Paul Richardson is good-not-great.
That all adds up to Sims having a chance to make some waves in the 2019 season. Continuing a strong training camp is step one. Step two is looking solid in the preseason. Then there’s the regular season.
If we’re being honest, Sims likely isn’t going to get tons of playing time to start the year. He has the skill to find his way right in the middle of things as the year goes on, though. Sims is the tallest wide receiver on the roster. He has great leaping ability as well, giving him a fantastic catch radius.
Sims should make the roster to start Week 1. From there, his role could expand weekly. By the end of the year, he could be one of the best receivers on the roster — a true difference-maker. That’s something the Redskins haven’t had at the position in quite some time.
