No one is going to mistake who the top running back on the New Orleans Saints depth chart is. Alvin Kamara clearly has that on lockdown. Furthermore, the team signed Latavius Murray this offseason to fill the RB2 role vacated by Mark Ingram, who left in free agency for the Baltimore Ravens. Those two roles seem pretty clear.

However, the Saints do have questions behind those two players. There are three veteran running backs on the roster that are vying for the third running back job: Dwayne Washington, Jacquizz Rodgers and Kerwynn Williams. The wild card of the group, though, is undrafted rookie out of Nebraska, Devine Ozigbo.

In truth, Ozigbo didn’t get a ton of work on Friday night but he made an impact when the ball was put in his hands. The former Cornhusker took three carries for 20 yards, headlined by an 11-yard burst. He also caught his only target of the night in the passing game, gaining nine yards on the play.

Ozigbo was circled as an underrated commodity in the 2019 NFL Draft by many experts, evidenced by the fact that he went 254 picks without being selected. Having said that, he showed both explosion and versatility throughout his time with Nebraska.

If he can continue to carve out opportunities throughout the preseason, this game gave hope that he has the talent to potentially be more valuable to the Saints than any of the three veterans trying to become the third back on the roster.
