2. Devin Smith

At one point, Devin Smith seemed like a can’t miss prospect. He was taken at No. 37 overall by the New York Jets in the 2015 NFL Draft following a senior season with the Buckeyes that saw him average 28.2 yards per catch while scoring 12 touchdowns.

Unfortunately, he never was able to reach his potential as injuries derailed his career. Smith played in just 14 games in two years with New York and had only 10 catches for 135 yards and a touchdown. He was eventually waived after suffering his second torn ACL in the same knee and it seemed as though his career was over.

Then, Smith received a second chance in the NFL after missing all of the 2017 and 2018 seasons. The Cowboys signed him in January as they wanted to see what the former second-round pick could do. So far, they have to be thrilled with what they have seen.

In his first game against San Francisco, Smith had a team-high 54 yards on three receptions. Against the Rams, he continued to play well, again pulling in three catches while gaining 24 yards and scoring his first touchdown of the preseason.

The Cowboys likely feel set with their top four receivers being Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, Randall Cobb, and Tavon Austin. After that, there’s a spot — or possibly two — up for grabs with Smith battling Cedrick Wilson, Noah Brown, and Jon’Vea Johnson battling to make the final 53.

Seeing Smith make this team wouldn’t be crazy, and that could become a reality should he continue to perform as well as he has in the first two preseason games.
