AFC East: New England Patriots

Outlook: Well, duh. Since 2001, the Patriots have won the AFC East all but twice (2002, 2008). While history undoubtedly favors the Patriots, let’s look at this year’s squad. *Looks at notes* Yep, they’re still good.

More from NFL Spin Zone

Offense: Even without superstar tight end Rob Gronkowski, New England is too good to write off. Their offense has been injected with a youth movement as wide receiver N’Keal Harry and running back Sony Michel (both former first-round picks) enhance a versatile and dynamic offense. Not to mention, this is still one of the best offensive lines in the league, which allowed the third-fewest sacks last season.

Defense: The defense has certainly helped New England stay atop the AFC East, too. The offense might get most of the attention, but the Patriots’ defense should be good enough to maintain some consistency. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore headlines a secondary that produced the third-most interceptions a year ago looks to feast again on the younger, less experienced quarterbacks around the division.

Competition: Speaking of those younger quarterbacks, the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills are both going through major changes in their franchises. While they have flashed potential at times, they are nowhere near New England’s level.

If you’re still skeptical of the Patriots winning their 11th consecutive division title, remember the two reasons they’ve gotten this far in the first place: Coach Bill Belichick and quarterback Tom Brady. Sorry to disappoint, but the Patriots own the AFC East.
