The Dallas Cowboys reportedly could look to trade 2017 first-round pick Taco Charlton. Which teams could they look to as trade partners?
Few teams in the NFL looked more impressive than the Dallas Cowboys to open up the 2019 season. Armed with new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore and with a defense that was one of the best units in the league last season, Dak Prescott and company cruised to a dominant win over the Giants. However, Taco Charlton, the team’s 2017 first-round pick, was not a part of that.
Charlton has been a disappointment in his first two full seasons in the league, showing limited effectiveness and, with the breakout of the Cowboys defense as a whole, he’s struggled to get onto the field. And that has led to where we are now as, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team could be looking to trade the defensive end as they’ve already had preliminary discussions.
Though no one that would potentially trade for Taco Charlton would be getting an immediate game-changer, he still could be a covetable asset. If the Cowboys are looking to cut their losses and just get something back for the defensive end, a former first-rounder could be had for a mid-round draft pick. That could be a low-risk, high-reward move for some teams.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at five teams that the Dallas Cowboys could potentially work with to make a Taco Charlton trade happen.
5. Miami Dolphins
Considering the fire sale currently ongoing with the Miami Dolphins, this might seem like a strange inclusion in regards to them actually trading for a player. Having said that, there are a couple of reasons why Miami would make sense for a Taco Charlton trade with the Dallas Cowboys.
For one, the Cowboys are a team that could be in the market for defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick, who the Dolphins are reportedly looking to trade themselves. If Dallas could work out a deal with Miami that sends Charlton to South Beach and lands them Fitzpatrick, that would mix things up in a good way for both teams.
More importantly, the Dolphins are team that is not going to win now but is instead looking for assets that they can build with. And while Charlton has not proven much to this point in his career with Dallas, he is a former first-round pick that could come at a semi-discounted price. If they can get him while acquiescing to Fitzpatrick’s request or otherwise, it’s a low-risk move that could work out well for Miami’s future on defense.
