3. Byron Jones notches first pick of the season

A former first-round pick back in 2015 out of Connecticut, Byron Jones spent the first three seasons of his career playing mostly at free safety. Then when Kris Richard took over as the defensive back coach, he was moved to cornerback. That led to Jones making his first Pro Bowl in 2018 and so far in 2019, he looks to be playing at just as high of a level.

Jones is able to mirror receivers and has the speed and size to keep up with anyone the opposing team throws at him. However, he has one area where he continues to come up short in — interceptions.

For all his great qualities, Jones has never been a ball hawk for Big D. Now in his fifth season in the NFL, Jones has just two interceptions to his name. In 2016, he recorded his first interception, which was done on a Hail Mary pass. 2017 was his second pick, which he did return 21 yards for a touchdown.

Now, he’s still looking for more and had a shot at getting one on the first pass of the game against the Washington Redskins. He had great coverage on Terry McLaurin and the ball hit his hands but he just couldn’t haul it in.

In Week 4, the Saints won’t be likely to test a lot of deep targets but they will throw the ball a lot to Michael Thomas, a player Jones is sure to see a lot of. At this point, he’s past due for a splash play and this could be the week he starts to make a play on the ball. Look for No. 31 to get his first pick since 2017 off the backup signal-caller.
