The Washington Redskins are 0-4 and could be heading for worse. A loss in Week 5 should mean the end of the Jay Gruden era.

The Washington Redskins are 0-4 to begin the 2019 season. Things will likely go from bad to worse, as they have the undefeated New England Patriots in Week 5. If we’re being honest, it’s probably a loss for the Redskins. It should also be the end of Jay Gruden’s time in the nation’s capital.

Many fans have been calling for the end of Gruden’s time in Washington for quite some time. Those cries for his dismissal have only grown louder and louder with each week this season. They’re at an all-time high at the moment and the Redskins front office needs to recognize that things likely aren’t getting better.

Give him his last chance, an impossible task. If Washington doesn’t beat New England, that should spell the end. Again, I understand this is an impossible task. The Redskins beating the undefeated reigning Super Bowl champion Patriots simply isn’t going to happen.

That’s the point though. Gruden should have been gone already. Pulling off a miracle is the only thing that should save his job at this point.

Since joining the Redskins in 2014, Gruden has a 35-48-1 record. He’s had just two winning seasons (and Washington went 9-7 and 8-7-1 in them) and one playoff appearance in six seasons. That appearance saw Washington lose in their first game. They also haven’t had a winning record now since 2016. At 0-4 it would take a miracle of all miracles for Washington to break that streak this year.

At this point, it just seems like they’re delaying the inevitable. So if that miracle doesn’t happen, why not just pull the plug right now? Going even further, end it with defensive coordinator Greg Manusky too. It’s not like I’m saying anything groundbreaking here. Fans have been asking for this for quite some time.

Now, the front office needs to realize it too. And there are some rumors that they might be thinking along the lines of switching things up sooner rather than later.

If you actually for some reason need more convincing though, look no further than quarterback. There are reports that Gruden didn’t want Dwayne Haskins, he was drafted because the front office wanted him.

It will be impossible to ever find out if these reports are true because Gruden will obviously always say that he was in on the pick (unless things go really sour, maybe). If they are true, why mess around, though?

Do you really want to keep a coach with a losing record, who has led a team to 0-5? No, you don’t. Do you really want to keep a coach who isn’t sold on your rookie first-round quarterback that you expect to be the face of the franchise for years to come? No, you don’t.

So why on earth would you want one that’s both of those things? The time for the Washington Redskins to cut ties with Jay Gruden was long ago. Now they’re just dragging a dead horse through the mud, with a pipe dream that he’ll be alive once they get to the lake.

The horse is dead, Dan Snyder. Go get a new one.
