Dud: Melvin Gordon III

In his anticipated 2019 debut after holding out for the entirety of training camp and the first three games of the regular season, expectations were considerably high for running back Melvin Gordon. The fifth-year pro was expected to make an immediate impact in his return to the field, yet that never came to be. He finished the game with12 carries for 31 yards and four receptions for seven yards.

Despite receiving more carries than fellow running back Austin Ekeler, it was the latter who took part in more snaps and was more involved in the team’s passing game. For someone who believes they should earn more money, Gordon still has much to prove.

Dud: Austin Ekeler

Despite achieving a Charger-record 15 receptions, Austin Ekeler failed to make a play when the Chargers needed it most. On two subsequent possessions near the goal line, the ball was thrown to Ekeler and he failed to score.

An integral part of the team’s offense and one of Philip Rivers’ favorite targets this season, Ekeler simply did not play the role this week. Production only matters if it’s ultimately meaningful. And when the running back couldn’t convert deep in Broncos territory, it’s safe to say Ekeler couldn’t produce when it mattered.
