4. Dallas finally gets some turnovers

There’s something broken in the Dallas Cowboys defense. Sure, they have their games where they look like one of the better units in the NFL. They can shut down the running game and make life hard on any receiver. Then they can also surrender four touchdowns to Aaron Jones and they also have a knack for allowing mediocre quarterbacks to look great against them — see games in the past against Colt McCoy, Austin Davis, and Marcus Mariota for examples.

As hard as all that is to figure out, one thing that’s easy to see is they’re completely awful at generating turnovers. Throughout the Rod Marinelli era, the Cowboys are always unbelievably bad at getting the ball back for their offense — especially when it comes to interceptions. And this season, they’re off to an even slower start than normal, as they are -4 in the turnover department on the season and have just one interception.

Part of the reason is the way Marinelli and Kris Richard coach their defensive backs. They have them follow the wideouts movements and attempt to get in the way of the ball — rather than have them turn their heads and actually make a play. This leads to several aggravating penalties and is the underlying root of their problems in this department.

On Sunday though, it feels as though they have to finally get the ball for the offense. Still, I don’t expect it to come in the form of a pick as they’ve proven time and again this is something they just can’t do. However, the Jets have a bad offensive line and Dallas has DeMarcus Lawrence and Robert Quinn. Those two can get in on Sam Darnold and create turnovers with a strip-sack or two.
