Chicago Bears: 5 Quarterback trade options to save season
Teddy Bridgewater, New Orleans Saints
We just witnessed what Teddy Bridgewater could do on the field. He marched into Soldier Field and completed 23 of his 38 passes for 282 yards and two touchdowns. He did that against the elite Chicago Bears defense and in place of an injured Drew Brees. Additionally, he was without two big weapons, running back/wide receiver Alvin Kamara and tight end Jared Cook. He looked in total control throughout the game.
Bridgewater experienced success. He took the Minnesota Vikings to the NFC Conference championship game in 2015. He was also in the Pro Bowl that year. He then suffered a horrible knee injury that almost cost him his life.
He came back from that and has the Saints near the top of the NFC again. When Brees went down, it was all doom and gloom for New Orleans. How Bridgewater would react to being a starter was unknown. Well, we now know. He’s 5-0 as the starter, completing 70 percent of his passes for 1,205 yards and nine touchdowns against just two interceptions. He has a quarterback rating of 103.7.
There is no question that when Brees is healthy he’ll be back as the starter. He is a future Hall of Famer and still gives the Saints the best chance of going far into the playoffs. Bridgewater showed, however, that he is no slouch himself.
The question for the Saints is what becomes of Bridgewater. The Saints have two voidable seasons in 2020 and 2021 for $2 million each. They could decide to keep him and have him take over permanently for Brees but would Bridgewater want to ride the bench two more years?
The Saints could decide to strike while the iron is hot and trade him for some picks. The Bears already saw what he could do without his weapons so imagine what he could do with the weapons in Chicago.
It would be nice to see Chicago pick up a proven quarterback to help them in this offense.
