8. Alex Highsmith, EDGE, Charlotte

One of the many prospects making a name for themselves is a bit of a small school star, Alex Highsmith from Charlotte. Highsmith makes a legit case for being one of the best senior edge defenders in the 2020 NFL Draft class. There will understandably be questions surrounding his level of competition. Nevertheless, Highsmith has proven he’s a force, as evident in his play against Northern Illinois in Week 9.

The 49ers took home a victory with Highsmith’s fantastic performance leading the way defensively, finishing the game with nine tackles, 2.5 for loss and a sack. What he did in Week 9 echoes his performances throughout the season, including a solid showing against the Clemson Tigers.

Highsmith started the season with six sacks in five games. Now, his season total is 8.5. He also has 42 tackles and 12.5 for loss. The former walk-on has improved every season, earning the recognition of Joe Marino from The Draft Network thanks to his versatility and blue-collar play.

"“[Highsmith] has snap anticipation and quickness releasing out of his stance… effective spin move… Experienced working for a stand-up role.”"

When you look at Highsmith, an easy NFL comp is Robert Ninkovich, formerly of the New England Patriots. Both players can do it all, whether it’s rush from the stand-up position or with their hand in the dirt.

Because of his ability to play in space, he can drop into zone effectively. He’s going to help a defense with his motor and versatility. Highsmith is an ideal fit for hybrid schemes and worthy of a day three pick, at least.
