Elway On the Way Out?

For one of the greatest quarterbacks ever, John Elway is far from great at finding one. Denver’s President of Operations (and de facto general manager) has had a shaky history at finding quarterbacks since he took the job after the 2010-2011 season. Look at each quarterback’s record during Elway’s tenure, including playoffs.

  • Peyton Manning: 50-15*
  • Brock Osweiler: 5-6
  • Tim Tebow: 8-5*
  • Trevor Siemian: 13-11
  • Case Keenum: 6-10
  • Joe Flacco: 2-5
  • Kyle Orton: 1-4
  • Paxton Lynch: 1-3

*includes playoffs

With Flacco missing the next game (and maybe more), Brandon Allen will hold down the fort until second-round pick Drew Lock is healthy. Keep in mind that Elway has only drafted Lynch (2016 first round), Osweiler (2012 second round) and Siemian (2015 seventh round).

Needless to say, his track record for picking quarterbacks is not good, excluding that guy Peyton Manning. Aside from quarterbacks, I’m not a fan of Elway’s selection of head coaches, either. John Fox was great for a few years with Peyton Manning and Gary Kubiak won a Super Bowl, but the firing of John Fox and the hiring of Vance Joseph were always questionable.

While initially a fan of Elway’s newest hire, Vic Fangio, a 2-5 start does not bode well for more than just Fangio. Elway had his time as Denver’s golden boy, and I wonder how much time he has left with Denver now.
