Cam Newton

Selected out of Auburn as a Heisman Trophy winner with the No. 1 overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft, Cam Newton has been the face of the Carolina Panthers for the past eight years.  The 2015 MVP award winner has taken this team as far as it can go — including a berth in Super Bowl 50 — and now it appears as though it’s time for Newton himself to go.

More from NFL Spin Zone

With Newton sidelined due to a foot injury, Kyle Allen has filled in beautifully for the Panthers this season. As a result, the belief is that the team will look to save nearly $20 million by either trading or releasing Newton in the 2020 offseason.

There are sure to be several teams who will line up for the opportunity to land Newton and his fancy hats in free agency or via trade. At 30 years old, Newton is still relatively young in terms of NFL quarterbacks. And while he hasn’t shown that MVP form in quite a while, he is still way better than half of the quarterbacks you will find starting in the league.

My prediction is that John Elway and the Denver Broncos will continue their trend of filling the quarterback position with a veteran who still has something left to prove. It didn’t work with Joe Flacco this season but that won’t stop Elway from taking another swing. Newton fits this profile perfectly and will get the Broncos back on track as playoff contenders.
