There have been plenty of disappointing teams in the NFL in the 2019 season but the Philadelphia Eagles have been the biggest letdown of the bunch.

Coming into the 2019 NFL season, the Philadelphia Eagles were being hyped up. With Carson Wentz no longer having Nick Foles behind him, Doug Pederson‘s team was being tabbed as the most complete roster in the NFL. On Sunday, they lost on the road to the Miami Dolphins, 37-31, and moved to 5-7 on the year.

In a game where the excuses were limited for the Eagles, the team went on the road and actually got out to a sizeable lead, jumping ahead 28-14 early in the third quarter. However, Philadelphia’s often suspect defense showed up in the worst way, giving up 23 straight points to Ryan Fitzpatrick and the Phins, digging Philly a hole they could not climb out of.

With the Dallas Cowboys leading the NFC East entering the week, everyone has been waiting on the Eagles to turn it on. They’ve remained within a game of their division rivals — a rival that beat them earlier in the season — and eyed an easy finishing stretch to help them catch up. The Dolphins, however, were part of that easy stretch.

At this point, it might just be time to admit that we were wrong about the Eagles and that this team might not have it in 2019.

Excuses have been made time and again for this group out of Philadelphia. Whether it’s been injuries on both sides of the ball, the offense having hiccups or the secondary performing poorly, the narrative has always painted the picture of a squad on the cusp of turning it on. But this is when that’s supposed to happen and they lost to the Dolphins.

Perhaps this roster simply isn’t as complete as we believed. The pass rush has under-performed, the rushing attack has been inconsistent, Wentz has been up and down and the secondary has been downright awful even when healthy. It’s been one disappointment after another which, in turn, makes the Eagles a disappointment.

Make no mistake, the Eagles are not alone in being disappointing in 2019. Teams such as the Cleveland Browns, Los Angeles Chargers and plenty of others came into the year with high expectations that they’ve fallen well short of. But at the same time, none of those teams were as sure of a thing as Philadelphia this season.

Subsequently, you have to label the Eagles as the league’s biggest disappointment this season. There is no team in the league that had such confident expectations for both their ceiling and floor as a group that has missed both marks so badly.

Maybe Philadelphia can still catch Dallas, who is struggling in their own right, and win the NFC East to earn a playoff berth. But even if they do, it’s hard to not think this team is far less dangerous and, frankly, impressive than they were supposed to be.
