Round 3: Albert Okwuegbunam, TE, Missouri

With the theme of ignored positions still going on, we have the tight end spot for Dallas. What’s really ironic is the Cowboys went out of their way to stockpile talent here while Jason Witten was in his prime. They spent second-round picks on Martellus Bennett, Anthony Fasano and Gavin Escobar during his career.

Then as Witten got closer to the end, they stopped adding players with that kind of pedigree. Instead, it was players such as Geoff Swaim who was a seventh-round pick, Rico Gathers with a sixth (who played basketball and not football), and undrafted Blake Jarwin.

When Witten did retire for the 2018 season, they used a fourth-round pick on Dalton Schultz, but he’s become a non-factor with Witten un-retiring this season. They also stayed away from tight ends in the 2019 draft as they were content to get No. 82 back.

Now, you would have to believe a new staff will be ready to move on and they again use a decent pick here, grabbing Albert Okwuegbunam from Missouri with their third pick in the draft.

There are all sorts of differing opinions on Okwuegbunam and his draft stock seemed much higher in 2019 but he elected to return for his redshirt junior season. That ended up hurting his stock as Okwuegbunam had just 26 receptions for 306 yards and six touchdowns.

Still, he showed when Drew Lock was there that he can be a viable weapon in the passing game. And in a weak tight end class, this ends up being a really good value. And if they retain Jarwin, another free agent to be, they will actually have two tight ends that can be effectively utilized as receivers.
