Mike McCarthy is reportedly set to be the next head coach of the Dallas Cowboys and the former Packers coach can maximize the talent on this roster.
With the dust still unsettled in Jason Garrett‘s cleaned out office, the Dallas Cowboys are ready to move someone else in. On Monday morning, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported that the Cowboys have reached an agreement with former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy.
After being fired by Green Bay in December 2018, McCarthy was a name thrown around for several head coaching vacancies last offseason. However, he elected to take the 2019 season off and re-emerged as a hot name heading into the 2020 offseason. Now he’s heading to America’s Team to try and capitalize on a talented roster, something Garrett could never do.
McCarthy’s track record in Green Bay speaks for itself. While with the Packers, he posted a 125-77-2 regular-season record and went 10-8 in the playoffs, which included winning Super Bowl XLV over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Moreover, he posted eight double-digit win seasons in 13 years with Green Bay.

Because he went 7-9 in 2017 and then was 4-7-1 prior to his dismissal in 2018, many believe that McCarthy might not be cut out to be an NFL head coach anymore. However, that’s not fully the case. After 13 years, he’d simply run his course in Green Bay, particularly in regards to his relationship with Aaron Rodgers.
Coming to Dallas, McCarthy now has the opportunity to show his creativity on offense while working with an ultra-talented cast of players. Assuming the Cowboys lock up Dak Prescott, McCarthy has a top-10 caliber NFL quarterback, a top-five running back in Ezekiel Elliott and weapons to work with around those guys, especially if Dallas can also keep Amari Cooper in tow.
For what he was able to do with Rodgers and some loaded Packers offenses during his tenure, there is reason to believe that McCarthy is capable of winning in Dallas with aplomb and relative ease, something that was rarely the case — at least consistently — with Garrett at the helm.
While some Cowboys fans may have wanted to swing for the fences with someone like Lincoln Riley or Urban Meyer, bringing in McCarthy stands as a fantastic step forward in Dallas. He’s proven, he’s worthwhile and he’s not an unimaginative hire that leaves everyone wanting.
As with any coaching hire, we can never be sure how McCarthy’s tenure with the Cowboys will fully turn out. But as they were looking for a head coach who wouldn’t waste a Super Bowl-caliber roster, hiring a coach that has reached the mountaintop with a similarly talented team seems like a move that every fan should be excited about.
