The Cowboys again needing a tight end in a relatively weak tight end class for 2020 is not a new situation for them. However, after they brought Jason Witten back and as they face a decision about the future of Blake Jarwin, the franchise can’t afford to punt on the position again. That’s where a player like Jared Pinkney out of Vanderbilt being available to them in the third round starts to become very attractive.

As we see with many top-100 picks at tight end, Pinkney is not an accomplished blocker right now though he’s willing and capable — he just needs to be honed in that regard. However, the former Commodore is a fantastic pass-catcher with nice size that could be a tremendous target for the Cowboys passing attack. McCarthy would love to have Pinkney as another weapon to work with.

If Ross Blacklock had more experience at the college level, there’s a good chance he wouldn’t make it anywhere close to the fourth round. However, with really just 2017 on his tape prior to this past season, the TCU Horned Frogs product falls into the laps of the Cowboys as they get a physically gifted and engaged player that, with some coaching to help with the nuances of the position, can be a force in the trenches.

Dallas could use Blacklock immediately to bolster their defensive tackle rotation as they have been shuffling bodies on the interior for some time. In an ideal scenario with the right technical development though, Blacklock has the legitimate potential to be a starter at defensive tackle in Dallas for the long haul.
