The million-dollar question that the New Orleans Saints face this offseason is what’s next at quarterback. Drew Brees’ contract is up as he’s also near the end of his career if you look at his age. Meanwhile, Teddy Bridgewater — who filled in beautifully for Brees this season — is also set to hit free agency this offseason. That leaves this offense with plenty of questions about what the position will look like. (Spoiler: It’s not Taysom Hill.)

For my money, Brees will be back with New Orleans for at least one more year. That’s probably about the coldest take that anyone could offer but it just seems the most likely solution for this team. At the same time, Bridgewater’s success as the Saints starter this season probably has put him out of the Saints’ price range in free agency, meaning he’s gone.

Subsequently, quarterback becomes a real first-round need for New Orleans as they need a quality backup but also a successor for Brees as his career winds down. And I love the fit of Jalen Hurts with this team. He is the type of quick-passer that could thrive in Sean Payton’s offense, especially getting time to learn under Brees.

Furthermore, Payton and the Saints have shown their willingness to be creative with the ways that they’ve utilized Hill since he arrived. Subsequently, they would likely be more than willing to maximize the potential that Hurts brings as an athlete capable of having several designed carries in the offense.

Hurts is not a perfect prospect but has more than enough talent to thrive in the NFL in the right system with the right development. All of the factors point to the Saints being the perfect fit for him.
