With Mike McCarthy taking over as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, it could help them land one of his former players who would fill a massive need at defensive tackle

The Dallas Cowboys finally decided to move on from Jason Garrett as their head coach and they ended up turning things over to Mike McCarthy, the former Super Bowl-winning coach of the Green Bay Packers.

His addition — after he spent a season away from the game — not only gives the Cowboys a proven winner, but it could help them land some of his former players. One such name is wide receiver Randall Cobb, who was with Dallas last season and is now a free agent.

Cobb played well in Dallas and could be more inclined to return with his former coach in town. However, they could also grab players in free agency such as Mike Daniels — a defensive tackle who could fill a massive need which has been created by their former defensive coordinator’s reluctance to add big-name players to the interior of the defensive line.

There was a point where Rod Marinelli was a fan-favorite as he helped turn the Cowboys defense around. However, he started to wear out his welcome due to his complete lack of attention paid to the defensive tackle spot.

For whatever reason, Marinelli didn’t think a top-level talent was needed inside and that led to them using a lot of under the radar players such as Maliek Collins, Antwaun Woods, and David Irving — who was an undrafted free agent before breaking out briefly for Dallas.

Daniels, who was released by Green Bay last season, spent 2019 with the Detroit Lions. He barely made any noise with them before heading to IR — which could hurt his stock as he enters free agency.

With that being the case, he may be tempted to join a coach he knows as he looks to rebuild his name.

Dallas currently has Trsyten Hill as their main defensive tackle under contract. Woods and Collins are each hitting free agency and while Tyrone Crawford gets snaps inside, he’s more of a defensive end.

Daniels would be a short-term answer but he would be able to help as Hill tries to develop into a legitimate player in the league. And he would also already have a relationship with the man in charge.
