The Kansas City Chiefs took on a giant-killer but were too much of a juggernaut to take down for the Titans as Andy Reid’s club earned a Super Bowl berth.

Even though the Kansas City Chiefs were at home on Sunday in the AFC Championship Game, there had to be some cause for concern. Not only had the visiting Tennessee Titans thrived as underdogs to this point, knocking off the No. 3 New England Patriots and No. 1 Baltimore Ravens on the road previously, but Tennessee had also toppled Kansas City in Week 10 of the regular season.

But when a trip to Super Bowl LIV was on the line, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs didn’t fall victim to the giant-killer that the Titans have been. Instead, Kansas City showed off their offensive arsenal at every turn and, at the end of the day, dictated the game flow to capture the 35-24 victory.

With punching their ticket to Miami and the Super Bowl where they’ll await the NFC champion from the matchup between the Packers and 49ers, the Chiefs end a 50-year drought between appearances in the Big Game. Meanwhile, head coach Andy Reid ends his own drought, winning just his second conference championship game in seven tries and returning to the Super Bowl for the first time since 2004.

Mahomes was phenomenal against a Titans defense that had made Tom Brady and likely 2019 MVP Lamar Jackson look quite pedestrian this season. The reigning MVP of the league went 23-of-35 for 294 yards and three touchdowns while also leading Kansas City in rushing with six carries for 56 yards and a touchdown.

To be sure, the Chiefs didn’t cruise aimlessly to victory over Tennessee. Having said that, when they fell down early against Derrick Henry and the Titans, Mahomes, Tyreek Hill, Damien Williams and this offense turned it up to another gear and seized control of the action, which was always going to be the deciding factor in this matchup.

As they did in the Divisional Round win over the Houston Texans though, the Chiefs showed off their explosive offense and looked like a team that may not be able to be stopped. With Mahomes continuing as one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL and an offense that is littered with elite weapons, this team looks just a cut above the rest of the league — at least the AFC as they proved on Sunday.

Sure, this defense isn’t elite but they might not need to be. All they need to be is good enough to allow the offense to take control. And for yet another time — this time on the biggest stage yet in the AFC Championship Game — the Chiefs showed they’re able to do just that. And if they prove it once more, they’ll be hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
