2. Kyle Dugger, S, Lenoir-Rhyne

One of the knocks on this Cowboys scouting staff is that they shun small-school kids at times. There’s some merit to Will McClay’s belief that players from bigger schools can handle the pressure better, but there’s no reason to completely write off talented players earlier in the draft simply because of where they played. And that should be the case with Kyle Dugger from Lenoir-Rhyne.

A small-school in Hickory, Nort Carolina, Lenoir-Rhyne hasn’t been an NFL hotbed with very few names making it to the league from there. The biggest name is Perry Fewell, but he’s an alumnus that turned into an NFL coach.

As for Dugger, this kid can play and he was on a mission to prove that this week in Mobile. At 6-foot-0 and 217 pounds, this kid is built for the position. He’s great in run support but can also hold his own in pass coverage. He proved that in the one-on-one drills as he went up against running backs and tight ends. Despite not doing this at Lenoir-Rhyne, Duggar had no issues whatsoever.

Formerly a darkhorse candidate, Duggar might have catapulted himself into the second day of the draft. Should Dallas not land a safety in the first round, this is a name to watch. Hopefully the staff in Dallas won’t balk due to where he played because Duggar looks ready to contribute in the NFL.
