Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs rallied to win Super Bowl LIV. What will this offseason be like for Andy Reid’s newly-crowned NFL champions?

It’s been a few weeks since Andy Reid’s Kansas City Chiefs hoisted the Lombardi Trophy it South Florida. The club’s 31-20 come-from-behind victory over the San Francisco 49ers, led by 2018 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, marked the first time since 1969 that the franchise captured a Super Bowl title.

How long ago was that? The Chiefs were still part of the American Football League.

So what to do for an encore? Repeating as NFL champions has always been a difficult task. So does Reid’s team have what it takes to make another run at the “Big Game?”

So What’s Next?

Of course, the big name when it comes to the Chiefs and a potential free agent is talented defensive tackle Chris Jones. He had his problems in terms of health in 2019 but he picked his spots and came up with a share of big plays during the team’s championship run. His presence was felt in a big way in the fourth quarter of Super Bowl LIV as he knocked down his share of Jimmy Garoppolo passes.

The other name that bears watching on this list is four-year wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, who caught 32 passes for 449 yards and four scores in 2019 and certainly could attract a lot of interest should he hit the free-agent market.

Biggest Offseason Concern?

Why would be easy to point out the final rankings of the Chiefs defense in 2019, mediocre at best, this was a unit that played much better down the stretch and was the catalyst for the club’s nine-game winning streak to close out 2019, including the playoff sweep of the Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans and San Francisco 49ers.

If anything, Reid’s team may want to address the ground game and the running back situation — although Damien Williams totaled 290 yards from scrimmage and six touchdowns in the club’s three-game postseason run.

The “D” word has been floated out there when it comes to these Kansas City Chiefs. And it’s not “defense” but rather “dynasty” — somewhat hard to believe considering the current team has one title But that’s the kind of excitement that quarterback Patrick Mahomes generates.

The three-year pro still has a lot of football left of him. Still, it’s worth noting that the last club to win back-to-back Super Bowls was well over a decade ago, a trick turned by the New England Patriots in 2003-04.

Yes, it took this franchise an awfully long time to hoist its second Lombardi Trophy. And there will be plenty of challenges ahead for this team, which now has quite the target on its back.
