4. Jaquiski Tartt

Considering that Jaquiski Tartt played 65.5 percent of the snaps at strong safety this past season, he might seem like an inclusion that stands out on this list. And no doubt that the 2015 second-round pick has had his moments. However, for a team that’s looking to save money, had a 2018 sixth-rounder in Marcell Harris play well when spelling Tartt and that Tartt is not a perfect player, he might be on the block.

More from NFL Spin Zone

Slated to make $6.275 million in the 2020 season, the 49ers can save $4.775 million while taking on only $1.5 million in dead cap. Considering that they could possibly upgrade the position in the first round of the NFL Draft while re-signing Jimmie Ward with money they save, cutting Tartt wouldn’t be a wholly accepted move but is one that might be necessary.

3. Tevin Coleman

Prior to the 2019 season, head coach Kyle Shanahan was reunited with running back Tevin Coleman in free agency. Playing in 14 games in his first season with San Francisco, the former Falcon had plenty of good moments and finished the year going for 544 yards and six touchdowns on 137 carries while catching 21 passes for 180 yards. He was clearly part of a timeshare but stepped up on numerous occasions.

However, his presence in the timeshare makes him expendable. Raheem Mostert stepped up in a huge way down the stretch while Matt Breida and Jeff Wilson Jr. remain on the roster as well. Take that and a deep draft class at running back and the over $4 million that the 49ers could save by cutting Coleman while taking on no dead cap seems like their best option concerning the running back.
