Arizona Cardinals – TE Charles Clay

The Arizona Cardinals were a surprisingly fun offense to watch last season. Kyler Murray was electric as a rookie, Kenyan Drake had several 100-yard games, and a few young wide receivers showed promise. Yet, the tight end position was a wasteland.

In the 2019 offseason, the Cardinals sought to find a quick fix at the tight end position by bringing in several free agents, most notably former Buffalo Bill Charles Clay. Clay was only signed to a one-year deal worth $4.5 million, but he was expected to take over the starting role given his pedigree and prior performance.

However, Clay performed miserably in 2019. He only caught 18 balls for 237 yards and one touchdown, leading all other tight ends on his team in catches and yards. He ranked outside the top 32 tight ends in yards after catch, drops and deep targets. He was more of a liability on the field than an asset, leading to his 39 percent snap share.

Clay is not going to command a large deal, but the Cardinals shouldn’t waste a roster spot by bringing him back. Maxx Williams is a sufficient interim starter until Arizona addresses the position in the draft or next offseason. With only $39 million in cap space, the Cardinals don’t have money to waste by giving Clay another chance.
