If the Pittsburgh Steelers learned anything from the 2019 season, it would be the importance of having a reliable backup quarterback since Mason Rudolph and Devlin Hodges made it clear they are both works in progress.

One can only imagine how different last season would have been played out if Ben Roethlisberger never suffered a season-ending elbow injury in September, but hopefully the veteran quarterback is healthy enough to return to his usual ways in 2020.

With that being said, since there is some uncertainty surrounding Big Ben at the moment, Pittsburgh would be wise to bring on a more reliable quarterback this offseason just to be safe.

Newton’s preference would obviously be to start instead of taking on a backup role, but this situation wouldn’t exactly be the worst in the world.

Since there is no guarantee that Roethlisberger will return to his usual ways after missing most of last season, the addition of Newton could be the perfect insurance for Pittsburgh just to be safe.

Otherwise, the concerns surrounding Rudolph and Hodges will only continue to be there for the Steelers moving forward since both options certainly can’t be trusted at the moment based off the results from last season when the Steelers missed out on the playoffs.
