New Orleans Saints are clear winners in re-signing Drew Brees
The New Orleans Saints have finally resigned Drew Brees to a two-year deal. Between the two parties, the Saints are the clear winner.
New Orleans Saints fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the team announced that they’ve re-signed Drew Brees for two more years. While some have strayed from their long-time teams, there was rarely any concern that Brees would be one of them. And that feeling was rooted in the truth in the end.
Brees and the Saints last won a Super Bowl 10 years ago and the team has changed plenty in the years since then. However, they are still heavily in the mix, as evidenced by their recent playoff appearances. But after falling short in tough-to-swallow fashion recently, getting back to the Super Bowl is clearly the goal for the Saints and their quarterback.
Not only are the Saints winners by keeping the Super Bowl window open but the deal itself that they re-signed Brees to is a victory for the team. The veteran signed a team-friend two-year, $50 million deal, which is a bit below market value as Ryan Tannehill and Tom Brady signed for $4.5 million per year or more than Brees. That gives New Orleans the ability to swing a little bigger elsewhere in free agency.

The fact that the deal is only for two years is something that’s a win for both the Saints and Brees himself. Brees’ injury in the 2019 season showed his age and certainly raised awareness that his career is at the end stages, as did the veteran mulling retirement. So the fact that it’s not a long-term pact works in everyone’s favor.
Furthermore, Brees returning gives the Saints the opportunity to handpick the player they believe can be his successor and let their long-time quarterback guide him. Since joining the team, he’s helped guide the organization through a number of tough times. His off-field work has been just as important as his on-field performance.
Any young quarterback would be lucky to have Brees as a mentor. Considering their success, they won’t be in a position to select one of the top players at quarterback in the draft. The Saints will be taking a developmental player, more than likely. However, they’ll be giving that player the chance to learn behind Brees, which is basically like taking a master-class in how to be a great quarterback.
Brees undoubtedly could’ve had more money by signing somewhere else and could’ve had a fresh start somewhere else. However, the Saints are winners again as the quarterback once again proved his loyalty to the team and the city of New Orleans. And as a result, the Saints’ window remains open and they’ll have at least two more chances to bring another Super Bowl back to the Big Easy.
