The San Francisco 49ers used a balanced approach to take the NFC this past season and these five targets in the 2020 NFL Draft can help them repeat.

Some may look at the San Francisco 49ers‘ loss to the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIV as a reason for gloom but that’s not necessary. In Kyle Shanahan and Jimmy Garoppolo‘s first full season together, the team reached the final game of the NFL season. As such, the future looks promising as this is a balanced group with sure footing at the most important position on the field now — even if Jimmy G wasn’t the reason they made it to the Big Game.

On offense, a trio of running backs led the way, smashing opponents in the mouth. Defensively they smothered opponents in surrendering just 19.5 points per game. However, like most teams, the 49ers saw some key players leave this offseason.

The biggest loss was self-inflicted after John Lynch traded DeForest Buckner to the Indianapolis Colts for a first-round pick rather than paying him a long-term extension (essentially electing to re-sign Arik Armstead instead). There’s a major need at defensive tackle with Solomon Thomas and D.J. Jones being the only names worth mentioning after Sheldon Day joined Buckner in Indianapolis.

On offense, the 49ers cut guard Mike Persons but signed Tom Compton, who started 14 games for the Jets. After that, however, the interior of the line still needs an upgrade. San Francisco also lost Emmanuel Sanders in free agency to the New Orleans Saints.

They signed Travis Benjamin from the Chargers but he’s played in only 17 games over the last two seasons. Despite the success of Deebo Samuel and the potential that Jalen Hurd offers, they can use an upgrade at the wide receiver position as well.

Even with the losses, the 49ers have a strong roster that doesn’t need much help as they approach the NFL Draft. Thankfully, they have two picks in the first and fifth rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Lynch may look to trade down to collect more picks in a draft that’s rich with talent at least one of the positions of need. Shanahan has gotten production out of rookies, so let’s explore the prospects who could come in and help the 49ers return the Super Bowl.
