Many feel that the Chicago Bears acquired Nick Foles to push Mitchell Trubisky. The new signal-caller, however, is a better option to lead the offense.

Many expert analysts and fans expected the Chicago Bears to acquire a quarterback good enough to push the current starter Mitchell Trubisky. Just before the free agency period began, the Bears were attached to a number of available quarterbacks. They were supposedly in on Teddy Bridgewater, Andy Dalton, Cam Newton and others.

The one player general manager Ryan Pace decided to pull the trigger on was Nick Foles. Foles won a Super Bowl MVP when he came off the bench and led the Philadelphia Eagles to the title in the 2017 season. He again came off the bench and got the Eagles to the playoffs in 2018 where he made big throws en route to eliminating the Bears in the Wild Card game.

In 2019, Foles took his talents to the Jacksonville Jaguars. As is the case with many Jaguars, he did not repeat any success there. He broke his collarbone and eventually lost his job to the cheaper option, Gardner Minshew.

The Bears gave up the compensatory draft pick they just received for Foles’ services. The thinking on the move is that Foles can push Trubisky so he improves, and if Trubisky goes down because of an injury the Bears have a great second option.

Is that what the Bears think, however? Despite having the Jaguars take on $18.75 million in dead cap money this season, the Bears still have to pay Foles $21 million in guaranteed money. Simply put, that isn’t backup quarterback money.

There will be a quarterback battle. Many feel that Trubisky has an inside track on the job. Pace spent a lot of draft capital to move up and draft Trubisky so he wants to see the youngster succeed. At the end of the season press conference, Pace continued to show support for Trubisky, saying the Chicago Bears enter 2020 with him as the starter.

Yes, Pace wants Trubisky to succeed, but he’s not in a place where he can wait for him to improve any longer. If he stays with Trubisky and he goes down, he’ll take Pace down with him.

Foles gives Pace an added option. If Trubisky falters, Foles has already proved that he can step in and get the job done.

That means if Trubisky truly has the inside track he’ll be on a short leash. Even though he’s played in Nagy’s system for two seasons, he hasn’t gotten a good grasp of it. Additionally, Foles has experience with everyone on the coaching staff. He played under Bill Lazor and John DeFilippo in Philadelphia and under Nagy with the Kansas City Chiefs.

If anyone should have the inside track it’s Foles. It seems like the Bears reorganized the coaching staff with him in mind.

People hope that Trubisky can finally break through and perform the way the Bears and their fans expected. From what he’s shown, though, he has a long way to go and he can’t possibly learn everything in just one season. We could forgive him for his rookie season, but if you look closely at his 2018 season, he was aided by the defense. In 2019, he was just all over the place. Now we expect him to put it all together in a few months because Foles is pushing him?

Foles is a better deep thrower than Trubisky. How many times have we seen Trubisky overthrow or underthrow passes deep? Also, Trubisky has trouble with out-passes, especially throws to the left side of the field.

Also, Foles plays the run/play option, or RPO, well. This was something Trubisky struggled with. Foles makes decisions quickly. He looks at the defense and processes what’s happening and makes the play. Also, he showed that he can play well under pressure-packed situations.

In the end, expect Foles to win the job. The situation is perfectly set for him to succeed. He knows the system and he knows the coaches. He also has a great defense behind him. Don’t be surprised if Trubisky becomes a draft-day trade asset, either. He can eventually get it, but the Chicago Bears cannot afford to keep waiting.

Yes, the offense still needs some tweaking, but if Foles can get a few more touchdowns on the board than the Bears had in 2019, we could be watching him create some more playoff magic, this time for the Chicago Bears.
