5. Los Angeles Chargers

After Philip Rivers‘ departure, it became clear that the Los Angeles Chargers need a long-term answer at the quarterback position. Tyrod Taylor may be a solid stopgap but the Chargers need to grab a prospect with enough upside to compete against Patrick Mahomes twice a year.

While they could wait to see who falls to them at No. 6 overall, I think they’ll be aggressive and try to grab Tua Tagovailoa.

With the Miami Dolphins sitting one pick ahead of them in the pecking order and having an abundance of draft capital at their disposal, the Chargers need to strike first in order to secure their top prospect.

Los Angeles has all of their picks in this draft and very few holes to fill on the roster. The rookies they select on Day 2 may not even see the field this year given the current talent on their depth chart.

Even if the Dolphins elect to trade up for Tagovailoa, I can still see the Chargers moving up to secure Justin Herbert. There is a clear chasm between Herbert and the next best rookie passer, so general manager Tom Telesco won’t roll the dice and wait on a position that will make or break his tenure in Los Angeles.

Even if it involves moving a player or multiple future picks, I expect the Chargers to trade up for one of the top-three quarterbacks come draft day.
