4. Matt Hennessy, OL, Temple

Hopefully, the Lions brass decides to keep Matthew Stafford on the roster since he does give them the best chance to win. Building a wall in front of Stafford could increase their chances of winning, especially if they can give him a running game.

I’m sure offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell would like to control the clock more. For Kerryon Johnson, or whoever the running back is, the Lions need a functional guard. Temple offensive center/guard Matt Hennessy is the ideal fit for Bevell’s scheme.

Lions fans are well aware that Bevell loves to run a zone-heavy scheme. Hennessy is a seasoned starter ideally suited for that style of offense. The 6-4, 307-pound lineman is an excellent technician who plays with a great base and good foot quickness. Moreover, the former Temple center has functional athleticism that allows him to move smoothly in space. He has light feet and the ability to get to the second level.

While he’ll never be confused for a mauler he uses his hands well and understands leverage. He’s a plug-and-play prospect that gives the Lions a quality starter in year one. Whether the Detroit Lions opt to keep Stafford or move on, they must continue to improve their interior offensive line.

The interior offensive line class is weak, so they should look to take one at some point on Day 2 with one of their third-round picks.
