3. Terrell Burgess, S, Utah

If the Lions brass has any shot at saving their jobs, focusing on the defensive side of the ball should be a priority. They need guys that can cover and players who are ready to come in and contribute immediately.

Whether or not they bring back Tavon Wilson should not stop them from taking a safety in the 2020 NFL Draft. Duron Harmon, a player Patricia coached him in New England, is the only noteworthy safety on the roster as of now.

The Lions need players that can perform more than one task, a player like Utah safety Terrell Burgess. During the Senior Bowl under Matt Patricia’s guidance, Burgess made an impression by flashing his cover skills.

Burgess is a smart player who excels in different types of coverages, but zone coverage is a strength. The 5-11, 202-pound safety can diagnose quickly and isn’t fooled by route combinations.

Burgess is explosive, he showed that during the NFL Combine, running a 4.46-second 40. He has enough quickness to play man coverage in short areas, making him ideal for the slot in certain packages. If the Lions have a chance to come away with Burgess in the middle rounds, they should take. He’d come in and help out as a sub-package player, on special teams, with the upside to be a starter.
