4. Indianapolis Colts

Despite the presence of Darius Leonard, a young star in the making, at linebacker, the Indianapolis Colts needed to further establish their defensive identity as they entered the 2020 offseason. And with one trade that sent the San Francisco 49ers their first-round pick, they were able to do that as they acquired DeForest Buckner and then locked him up on a long-term extension.

With the Buckner trade and signing quarterback Philip Rivers to a one-year deal, the Colts are in position to try and compete not just for an AFC South title but for a Super Bowl in the upcoming season. Having said that, they could use more proven playmakers on the edge if they want to further establish their identity in the trenches around their newfound star in Buckner.

While Kemoko Turay has flashed potential, he’s not proven his merit yet and dealt with injuries in 2019. On top of that, Justin Houston remains productive but is a bit long in the tooth at this point while a second-round selection from last year, Ben Banogu, has yet to show he’s ready to be a top-tier pass-rusher at this point as well.

Signing Clowney, which the Colts have the money to do after trading their first-rounder to San Francisco would alleviate any concerns about the defensive end spots, however. Though he has his injury concerns, protecting him in a strong defense such as this would allow him to thrive. What’s more, the secondary in Indianapolis has some question marks and making the pass rush elite would help to levy any concerns about that unit.
