5. Antoine Winfield Jr., S, Minnesota

The Green Bay Packers have a sneaky need at safety. Darnell Savage and Adrian Amos are both capable starters, but behind them the depth is extremely thin. Take into account that Green Bay has a need for a slot cornerback, as well, and drafting a do-it-all defensive back makes a ton of sense.

Minnesota safety Antoine Winfield Jr. is one of the most versatile players in the entire 2020 NFL Draft and makes a ton of sense for the Packers. Many have touted him as a potential second-rounder, but the Packers don’t pick until No. 62 in the second round, which means they may have to take him early (or trade back a few spots).

Winfield’s father was a Pro Bowl cornerback who played the majority of his career with the Minnesota Vikings. As a redshirt sophomore last season, Winfield led the Gophers in tackles (83) and had seven interceptions. His instincts and ability to break on the ball separate him from other safety prospects. He was named a First-team AP All-American, First-team All-Big Ten and Tatum-Woodson Big Ten Defensive Back of the Year in 2019.

Some had questioned Winfield’s athleticism, but he removed all doubts at the NFL Scouting Combine. His 40-yard dash (4.45 seconds) and vertical jump (36 inches) were particularly impressive. Winfield would be a do-it-all defensive back for the Packers, similar to how Micah Hyde was utilized during his time with the team. He would be able to play anywhere in the secondary.
