Chicago Bears: 5 Sleepers to target in 2020 NFL Draft
3. Tyler Johnson, WR, Minnesota
The Chicago Bears have a need at wide receiver. After cutting Taylor Gabriel, they need a receiver who can make plays. They picked a good time to need a receiver since this class is probably the deepest at wide receiver in the history of the draft.
Tyler Johnson from Minnesota is a good option for the Bears if they decide to look for one later in the draft. He’s projected to go in the fourth round. The Bears don’t have a fourth-round pick but perhaps they make a trade to get back into that round. Pace has made at least one trade (sometimes multiple trades) in every draft and there’s no reason to believe he won’t in this one.
Measuring in at 6-1 and weighing 206 pounds, Johnson has the size to be a good NFL receiver. He is more quick than fast but has the route-running skills that help him create separation. Additionally, he is a physical receiver who uses his body to keep defenders from getting to the ball, like a power forward going up for a rebound.
Johnson can be a great possession receiver with his ability to make a ton of catches. As a junior, he made 78 catches for 1,169 yards and 12 touchdowns. He followed that up in his senior season by making 86 catches for 1,318 yards and 13 touchdowns. His catches and yards led the Big Ten in 2019.
Johnson could give the Bears what Brandon Marshall did when he played in Chicago. He’ll make volume catches, many of those resulting in big plays, and he’ll keep the sticks moving. With his body control and physicality, he’ll be a great red-zone target as well. He’ll be a great asset for the Bears’ offense.
