With only five picks in the 2020 NFL Draft, this will be an interesting year for the New Orleans Saints but what would their best strategy be?

The New Orleans Saints undoubtedly have a strategy in place for the 2020 NFL Draft. Never afraid of draft-day trades, the Saints have a tendency to pull one over on fans and make some shocking moves they believe is best for the long-term outlook of the franchise.

Looking back at last year, the Saints were without a first-round pick. In 2018, they gave away their 2019 first-round pick to snag Marcus Davenport. But they remained aggressive, giving up a 2020 second-round pick to select Erik McCoy. They were winners with the end result of both deals but things are a bit different this year.

With the 2020 NFL Draft happening virtually, we are sure to see plenty of excitement. How it will affect communication and deals between teams is unknown considering the unprecedented nature of this year’s event. But it should open plenty of doors for the Saints to make more moves.

More from NFL Spin Zone

The Saints currently have only five picks in their arsenal as they ready to make selections in the first, third, fourth, fifth and sixth rounds. With so few selections, New Orleans will have to be careful to nail their picks. Considering how well this team has drafted in recent years, though, there should be little concern about that.

Some have suggested that the Saints could trade up from the No. 24 overall pick. While some wild rumors have suggested doing so for Joe Burrow, that’s as far-fetched as it sounds. If New Orleans moves up, they will likely be doing so to land someone in the front seven or perhaps a wide receiver to help out Drew Brees and complement Michael Thomas.

Of course, one wrinkle that could result in a surprising move from the Saints would be trading away one of their key players. There has been some buzz that running back Alvin Kamara could be dealt during the draft. Perhaps the Saints could deal the versatile former third-round pick for a second-rounder to improve their stock of draft picks.

Conversely, you can’t rule out the Saints potentially trading away some of their scarce picks for another player. Whether that’s a move to pick up an experienced wide receiver or to address another position of need, the possibility of making that type of deal is there. In truth, it’s never easy to pinpoint what Sean Payton and the franchise are going to do.

Though not exciting, there’s also the chance that the Saints aren’t interested in making any moves in the 2020 NFL Draft. Their recent history suggests that’s probably unlikely, especially if they want to add to their five selections. No matter what, however, New Orleans has proven to be a sure bet in the draft and fans should have faith this year will be no different.
