Washington Redskins: Antonio Gibson is a multi-headed weapon to unleash
By Hunter Noll
The Washington Redskins has only one selection on Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft but could’ve potentially acquired more. How did they fare in Rounds 2 and 3?
Admittedly, Day 2 of the 2020 NFL Draft wasn’t exactly all that action-packed for the Washington Redskins. They had zero picks in the second round and just one in the third round. There was a lot of talk heading into the day that they could acquire some more though. Mainly, all those rumors were surrounding Trent Williams. However, Washington ended up not trading the veteran away.
Due to that, they finished the day with just that one pick, No. 66 overall. With that selection, the Redskins drafted Antonio Gibson. Gibson is a hybrid player from Memphis. He spent time as a running back, wide receiver and as a returner.
That makes him an incredible pick for the Redskins. They desperately need a returner. It might not seem like that much of a problem but anyone that’s watched Washington knows how bad it’s been for them recently.

Meanwhile, the Redskins showed a lot of promise with their rookie receivers last season. Terry McLaurin is the real deal. Meanwhile, Steven Sims Jr. looked incredible in the slot and Kelvin Harmon has incredible potential.
They still need more depth and skill at the position though. And Gibson brings talent and athleticism that can be utilized immediately. He also gives Dwayne Haskins another weapon. And Washington needs to give their young quarterback as much talent as they can so they can seriously evaluate him.
At the same time, he adds value at running back. That’s far from a massive position of need for Washington, but he brings a lot to the table there and gives them a ton of versatility.
Gibson needs a lot of polishing at both running back and wide receiver. But he’s just 21 years old, so he has plenty of time to figure things out. Gibson gives the Redskins versatility. He helps in multiple areas and adds another weapon for Haskins.
This isn’t some type of crazy steal or anything, but it’s a very solid pick. Incredible talent for the third round and someone with elite upside who will be able to help them immediately. Due to that, it’s impossible not to give the Redskins a high grade for the pick. They get a strong “A-” for the pick.
However, this isn’t just a grade for the pick. It’s a grade of the day. And this being the Redskins only pick hurts them a little. Honestly, I think it’s good that they didn’t trade Williams. If the Redskins aren’t getting the value they don’t think they deserve for him, why do it? The left tackle will play this year if they don’t trade him. So why not try to get the very best for him.
That being said, one pick in two rounds makes this a little tougher. Unless it’s just the absolutely best pick of the draft, you can’t give the team a grade in the “A” range for one selection in two rounds. Therefore, the grade get’s bumped down a little bit.
Final Day 2 Grade: B
