The first freshman winner of the Walter Payton Award — handed out to the FCS Offensive Player of the Year annually — North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance is one to watch in the 2020 college football season.
Obviously, when you think about quarterbacks that suited up for the Bison, you think about Carson Wentz. And after his redshirt freshman season, it would be unfair to Lance to put him on the level of Wentz. However, he’s a legitimate talent with the potential to be an NFL starting quarterback, which he showed at a young age.
In his first season as the starter, Lance not only led the Bison to the FCS National Championship but he was the catalyst for their success. He dominated the lower level of competition like you’d want an NFL prospect to as he threw for 2,786 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 67 percent of his throws and tossing zero interceptions. Oh yeah, he also rushed for 1,100 yards and 14 touchdowns too.
Philip Rivers is in a position to potentially take the Colts to a Super Bowl. He’s also dangerously close to 40 years old and may hang it up soon. Though Indianapolis spent a mid-round pick on Jacob Eason, Lance is a superior prospect overall with greater upside and someone the Colts shouldn’t hesitate to bring in and ready to take over for Rivers.
