3. Sign Jordan Reed

It’s clear that the Dallas Cowboys are looking to change the way they use tight ends. For years, they have relied on Jason Witten, who was one of the best in the business. While it’s true he had lost a step in recent seasons, Witten spent the majority of his career being pointed to as one of the most well-rounded at his position in the NFL.

Witten was not only sure-handed but he was an excellent blocker. And the blocking is what really did it for Jason Garrett and Scott Linehan for so many years. They seemed allergic to athletic tight ends but that’s not the case with Mike McCarthy as the Cowboys gave Blake Jarwin a healthy extension ahead of this season.

The money Jarwin got points to him being the No. 1 tight end but the depth behind him is questionable. They did sign undrafted free agent Charlie Taumoepaeu, who is an intriguing prospect but playing at Portland State means he’s a long way from contributing. Dalton Schultz is on the roster as well but he’s more of a blocker that has shown flashes in the passing game but still hasn’t been great.

That’s not the case for Jordan Reed, who has been one of the better pass-catching tight ends during his career. In his six seasons with the Washington Redskins, Reed has 329 receptions for 3,371 yards with 24 touchdowns. His best year was in 2015 when he had 952 yards and 11 scores on 87 catches.

Of course, Reed’s problem has been injuries which is why he’s still available. There’s no guarantee he can beat the injury bug, but his upside makes him worth the risk.
