Green Bay Packers: Defending the 2020 NFL Draft class
Heir to the Iron Throne
Drafting Jordan Love in the first round has given the entire league déja vu as a similar situation arose in 2005 when the Packers drafted Cal-Berkley quarterback Aaron Rodgers at No. 24 overall even though they still had a productive Brett Favre on the roster. But everyone has been critical of selecting Love when they maybe shouldn’t be.

As much as we hate to say it, Rodgers is in the latter half of his 30s and it’s unknown how many more years he has in the league. It is a responsible move by Gutekunst and his staff to draft Love this season.
While the team is fully committed to winning with their current superstar, this draft choice is insurance down the road so that they can continue their tradition of winning with a quick transition from Rodgers to Love.
This may feel like a pointless pick now as Love may not start for another three years but when will the organization get another chance to draft a quarterback with elite potential in the late-first round while they are still winning games?
Love will have the ultimate advantage to succeed as he will be able to learn from Rodgers and continue to develop in NFL training programs. He is not a starting-tier quarterback yet. But with a few years as an understudy, he will be ready to accept the torch and help Titletown win even more championships.
