Since his release in March, former Carolina Panthers’ quarterback Cam Newton has been on the open market. Which NFL clubs could still be in his future?

The NFL’s most successful team this century has made it perfectly clear they’re not interested in bringing Cam Newton to Foxborough. The Los Angeles Chargers were thought to have a need behind center but general manager Tom Telesco used the sixth overall pick last week on University of Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert.

And there was the connection between the first overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and former Carolina Panthers Sean McDermott and Brandon Beane. The Buffalo Bills selected University of Georgia quarterback Jake Fromm in the fifth round to vie for the backup job behind Josh Allen.

Nine-year veteran quarterback Cam Newton is still in search of a club to play for in 2020. Some would say he’s the most talented free-agent quarterback on the market these days, although some would also throw Andy Dalton into the mix now that he’s hit the open market.

Earlier this week, the New Orleans Saints signed former Tampa Bay Buccaneers signal-caller Jameis Winston to a one-year contract, taking him out of that conversation.

Back to the New England Patriots. Via Mike Girardi of NFL.com, Bill Belichick’s team isn’t planning on bringing in the 2015 NFL MVP. The Los Angeles Rams have starter Jared Goff and inexperienced John Wolford in reserve. Could there be an opening there?

What about the Jacksonville Jaguars, with Gardner Minshew, former Steelers’ backup Josh Dobbs and 2020 sixth-round pick Jake Luton? Of course, that team may have its eye on another veteran.

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been mentioned by some but their quarterback room at the moment includes Ben Roethlisberger, Mason Rudolph, Devlin Hodges, Paxton Lynch and J.T. Barrett.

So what’s the answer? Apparently, Cam Newton may have to wait his turn longer than he or some may have expected. There’s simply not a lot of openings around the league at this moment. The talented performer also hasn’t played since Week 2 of 2019 due to a foot injury and a year ago at this time was recovering from shoulder surgery.

It’s far from an ideal situation for a player that led his team to four playoff appearances in five years and a Super Bowl appearance in 2015. But the NFL is full of surprises and who knows exactly where the former Carolina Panthers’ field general will end up.
