Dez Bryant to the San Francisco 49ers just might work.

Former Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant hasn’t played in the NFL in two years but he continues to get his name mentioned when teams need help at wide receiver. Once again in 2020, he’s done this as he recently made it known that he would be interested in joining the San Francisco 49ers.

For the 49ers, they could be interested in adding some depth at the position due to recent injuries. Their current top receiver, Deebo Samuel, broke his foot and will likely miss the entire preseason and possibly some of the regular season.

Richie James, who had started to come on in his second season, suffered a broken wrist and while he could be back before Samuel, he too could miss the majority of the team’s training camp and preseason.

Their injuries highlight the lack of depth on the team but they also have very little veteran experience. For that reason, someone such as Bryant could be the answer for them.

How the San Francisco 49ers could use Dez Bryant

Last season, the offense improved when they made a trade with the Denver Broncos to acquire Emmanuel Sanders. Not only was his talent helpful, but soo too was the experience he shared with the younger players. He also forced defensive backs to pay attention to him whether the ball was coming his way or not.

Bryant could offer a similar player. He’s not the dominant weapon he was during his insane stretch from 2012-2014, but Bryant is still a physical force who can be a reliable target for quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

As for the past two seasons, Bryant has been working hard to get back into the NFL. He was released by Dallas following a disappointing 2017 campaign which saw him record 69 receptions for 838 yards and six touchdowns. He was eventually added to the New Orleans Saints roster but tore his Achilles in one of his first practices with the team.

He spent last season trying to get back to 100 percent healthwise and has said he’s ready to get back on the field and prove he can still get it done.

San Francisco has nothing to lose by giving him a shot. He would be a low-risk with a possible high-reward addition at a position of need.
