Cam Newton will improve every aspect of Patriots offense
Cam Newton landing with the New England Patriots improves the whole offense.
The New England Patriots were already slated to have a new quarterback to take over offensively leading into the 2020 NFL season, they now have another quarterback on the roster that will fight for that starting spot.
Earlier on this offseason, as everyone knows, legendary Patriots quarterback Tom Brady departed from New England to join the Tampa Bay Buccaneers via free agency to finish out the remainder of his career in Florida.
Following that departure, the Patriots appeared to be satisfied with their two quarterbacks on the roster at the time, those players being second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham and veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer.

On Sunday evening, however, New England dove into the free-agent market and signed a veteran quarterback that was long viewed as a player that made sense to bring into the fold, that being former Carolina Panthers MVP quarterback Cam Newton.
Over the weekend, ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Chris Mortensen reported that Newton agreed to a one-year deal with Bill Belichick and company in New England.
Right away, Newton will be in a good position to take the offense over in Foxborough as the new starting quarterback in the post-Brady era and might even push them back to being favorites in the AFC East. There are also a number of ways the veteran player will positively impact and help every aspect of the Patriots offense.
The Patriots offense is alive with Cam Newton in the fold.
The first thing that Newton will be able to help is obviously the passing game, an area that was in somewhat of a question for New England with the thought of going into 2020 with Stidham under center.
But with the insertion of Newton at quarterback, the Patriots might be able to get somewhat back to the level of dominance in the passing game along with veteran wide receiver Julian Edelman and company on the outside of the field. Newton, who will also be able to rely on New England’s pass-catching running back group, has averaged 3,226.8 yards and 20.2 passing touchdowns per season throughout his nine-year career.
Another aspect that Newton will assist with as he embarks on a new journey with the Patriots is his ability to use his feet in the running game and also help with the rushing attack in general. That is something New England hasn’t had with its quarterback for basically as long as we can remember.
Throughout his nine-year professional career, Newton has averaged 534 yards and 6.4 rushing touchdowns on the ground. That will not only help with opening up the passing game and can counter that potential threat, but it might even make Patriots running back duo of Sony Michel and James White even more dominant and dangerous while leading the running back group out fo the backfield.
Outside of his abilities on the field, Newton also carries some postseason experience — having played in the postseason a total of four times out of the nine years he was in Carolina — while providing the Patriots with yet another veteran voice in the locker room. That might be even more important within the quarterback room along with the veteran Hoyer to potentially help further develop Stidham if he is still a quarterback New England would like to turn to in the future.
There were many reasons why Newton joining Bill Belichick and company in Foxborough for at least the 2020 NFL season, and now that thought has become a reality. And with the addition of the veteran quarterback, he will help every aspect of the Patriots offense that they haven’t really had in the past.
