2019 was a rough season for the Cowboys. Head coach Jason Garrett entered the offseason knowing he was on the hottest seat in the NFL as he was going into the final year of his contract and team owner Jerry Jones let it be known the team wanted to see something special or they were moving on.

They also had contract disputes going on with DeMarcus Lawrence and Ezekiel Elliott. They got Lawrence done in time but Zeke’s negotiation went until right before Week 1 of the regular season.

We all know what happened next as they started out on fire with a 3-0 start before going 5-8 from there. In the end, an 8-8 season marked the end for Garrett. But could it also be the end of the line for the final top pick in the Garrett era?

Dallas was without a first-round pick due to the Amari Cooper trade the previous season, meaning their first pick in 2019 came at No. 58 in the second round. With their choice of safeties on the board (which was arguably their greatest need), the Cowboys took UCF defensive tackle Trysten Hill.

This pick was met with a collective sigh from Cowboys nation as Hill wasn’t a player high on their wish list. While he did show flashes during his career, Hill wasn’t a starter in his final season as his coaches questions his football maturity and effort. As Dallas often did under Garrett’s watch, they allowed a defensive coordinator too much input though as Rod Marinelli decided he could ‘coach ’em up’.

After one season, it doesn’t look great for Hill. Sure, it’s far too early to call him a bust but recording just five tackles in a season where they were thin on the defensive line speaks volumes. Factor in the addition of Gerald McCoy, Dontari Poe, and rookie Neville Gallimore, and Hill looks as though he can be completely lost on this depth chart.

Dallas wouldn’t get close to the investment they made in Hill should they try and trade him but this coaching staff isn’t invested in him, so it won’t matter.
