Seattle Seahawks: 5 Cut candidates sitting on roster bubble
By Samuel Teets
Seattle Seahawks cut candidate No. 4: Anthony Gordon, QB
Anthony Gordon did not hear his name called in the 2020 NFL Draft, but the Seahawks signed him as an undrafted free agent. Gordon joined a roster that already features a future Hall of Famer in Russell Wilson and a seven-year veteran in Geno Smith. Given Seattle’s tendency to employ only one backup quarterback, Gordon could find himself on the open market or practice squad when we get closer to the season.

Gordon prospered in his one full year as a starter in college. At Washington State, he broke multiple school records in the air raid offense. As a senior, Gordon completed 71.6 percent of his pass attempts and set single-season program records with 5,579 passing yards and 48 passing touchdowns. He also threw 16 interceptions as Washington State went 6-7.
Gordon led the NCAA in completions (493) and pass attempts (689) in 2019. He finished second in passing yards, touchdowns, and interceptions. Gordon only trailed LSU’s Joe Burrow for yards and touchdowns and Utah State’s Jordan Love for interceptions. Both Burrow and Love went in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft.
When he signed with the Seahawks, Gordon became the third consecutive Washington State product to get his shot in the NFL. Gardner Minshew landed in Jacksonville as a sixth-round pick last year and eventually became the team’s starter. The New York Jets drafted Luke Falk in the sixth-round in 2018, and he started two games for the team this past season.
Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like Gordon can make Seattle’s final roster. Wilson has never missed a start during his eight-year career, and the Seahawks don’t heavily prioritize the backup spot. The team never keeps more than two quarterbacks and Smith held the backup job last season. That puts Gordon at a heavy disadvantage.
