Tevin Coleman’s fantasy football value could see a huge upswing.

Working in the Kyle Shanahan offense, the San Francisco 49ers are always going to use their running backs — all of them. For fantasy football managers, however, that can sometimes be frustrating. Anyone who drafted Tevin Coleman in 2019 with high hopes upon his arrival in the Bay Area can certainly relate. But even if that burned you, the situation might be setting up to bet on Coleman again in fantasy football.

On Wednesday, Raheem Mostert, who led the 49ers in rushing yards and touchdowns last season, requested a trade from the team as he’s unhappy with his current contract situation. While there is no certainty that his request will be granted, it’s certainly in the cards as he’ll have plenty of suitors. And that could open the door for Coleman in a big way.

Yes, Coleman and Mostert tied for the team lead in carries last season. Moreover, there are other backs still on the roster. But on the whole, Mostert leaving San Francisco would drastically change the valuation of Tevin Coleman in fantasy football leagues for the 2020 season.

Mostert being traded makes Tevin Coleman a big-time fantasy football sleeper.

In the platoon backfield of the 49ers last season, Coleman actually had fewer carries (137) than in his two previous seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. But with Mostert and also Matt Breida, who was traded to Miami back in April, potentially both being gone, that would change a great deal.

Yes, Jerick McKinnon could return to the mix to split carries. However, with his durability issues in recent years, it’s hard to imagine a scenario with Mostert removed from the equation where Coleman isn’t the lead back. And while he himself was banged up last season and has never been a featured back, the fantasy football value is obvious.

Only the Baltimore Ravens last season had more rushing yards than the 49ers, a testament to how Shanahan operates. Everything comes out of the run game, which means any player who is getting the majority of the carries in that offense is going to be extremely valuable as a fantasy football commodity.

Now, it’s worth noting that Coleman isn’t going to be a superstar. He doesn’t possess the talent of players like Christian McCaffrey, Ezekiel Elliott and Saquon Barkley. But he’s more than serviceable and could end up in a great situation if the Mostert trade is made. That’s more than worth increasing where you draft him in leagues.

Coleman is currently going off the board as RB34 according to Fantasy Football Calculator ADP in half-PPR leagues. Without Mostert, it would be hard not to consider him a fringe top-20 player at the position this season. The lead back in a Kyle Shanahan offense is simply that valuable and that’s exactly what Tevin Coleman would become.
