Dak Prescott contract prediction: Four years, $152 million

The Dallas Cowboys and Dak Prescott were almost surely scouring every bit of information coming out regarding the new Mahomes contract. The two sides have been embroiled in negotiations for the last two offseasons yet, as the July 15 franchise tag deadline approaches in 2020, Prescott has not been signed to a long-term contract and would play on the tag if a deal isn’t reached.

Plenty of signs and reports indicate that Prescott and Dallas will get a deal done before the deadline but it’s fascinating to think how the Mahomes deal affects what he’ll get paid and how the deal will look.

On one hand, the first five years of the Mahomes contract give Prescott and his agent a firm figure to point to. He’ll likely now demand a contract with an annual average value that falls between the 2021 franchise tag value (roughly $37 million) and the yearly average of the first five seasons of Mahomes’ extension (approximately $39.5 million).

The flip side of that is the years in the contract. One of the biggest reported snags in negotiations has been that the Cowboys want Prescott to sign a five-year contract while the quarterback has been adamant about signing for four years. With the 10-year length of the Mahomes deal, you have to wonder how that will play into talks.

When it’s all said and done, though, Jerry Jones and the Cowboys can’t let Prescott get away and, as such, I believe they acquiesce to his demands. Thus, before the July 15 deadline, he’ll sign a four-year contract with an annual average value of $38 million.
