The Washington NFL team will reportedly retire the Redskins nickname on Monday.

The past few weeks have moved quickly for the Washington NFL team. Team owner Dan Snyder announced that the franchise would be undergoing a thorough review of the team’s Redskins nickname, a moniker that many have called offensive for some time. Now, it’s more than just a review. As reported by the Sports Business Journal early on Monday morning, the organization is expected to retire the Redskins nickname officially on Monday.

Washington will have a new nickname for the 2020 NFL season. However, a Redskins name change won’t take full effect just yet — it’ll just be the old one being retired. Per the report, there are still some pending trademark issues in play that will keep Washington from announcing a new team name on Monday.

Having said that, since the moment that the review of the Redskins name change was reported, no one has stopped talking about potential options for a new nickname for the Washington NFL team.

Odds on new nickname to replace Redskins for Washington NFL team

While everyone likely has their own personal favorite new nickname for the Washington NFL team, some options are clearly better than others. And according to BetOnline (via Newsweek), there are also odds for what the new team name will be. Here are the odds-on favorites to be the new team name in Washington:

  • Washington Redtails +300
  • Washington Presidents +300
  • Washington Generals +400
  • Washington Lincolns +600
  • Washington Veterans +800
  • Washington Americans +1000
  • Washington Memorials +1000
  • Washington Monuments +1000
  • Washington Kings +1200
  • Washington Roosevelts +1200
  • Washington Redhawks +1500

As many on social media have said, the Washington Redtails appears to be the best option for the Redskins name change. With its ties to history, ability to keep the “HTTR” motto of fans and the potential artwork available, that seems to be where things are most likely headed.

Regardless, the franchise making the choice to make a Redskins name change (finally) and to also stay away from Native American imagery in such a change is a positive move in Washington. Whatever they choose, it’ll be a step forward for Snyder’s organization.
