Dallas Cowboys safeties: Fighting for a spot

Luther Kirk

There’s very little known about Luther Kirk, the Cowboys undrafted free agent from Illinois State. Playing at a small school limited his exposure, but once he was able to show out in front of scouts, that’s exactly what he did.

Kirk was one of the players who stood out at the Shrine Bowl and was considered a draft sleeper by Pro Football Network’s Scott Gorman, who praised his versatility.

"“Kirk’s versatility as a prospect will be his big calling card when it comes to his chance of being selected in the 2020 NFL Draft. He has seen time at both safety spots, while also showing the ability and willingness to cover the slot. The nickel corner spot is something that Kirk touched on during his time in St. Petersburg this week at the East-West Shrine Bowl.” — Gorman, Pro Football Network"

Kirk’s ability to play three different spots will be key to making the team — and it’s also reminiscent of what Xavier Woods did as a rookie coming out of Louisiana Tech. That season. Woods spent more time in the slot as the nickel back than he did as safety. He then moved to safety full-time in 2018, where he has been since.

Possibly Moving Over: Chidobe Awuzie

One other name to watch in all this is Chidobe Awuzie. There has been talk that the new coaching staff wants to toy with the notion of moving Chidobe Awuzie from cornerback to safety. He could be a good fit there as notated by Benjamin Solak of The Draft Network — who says Awuzie is still a poor fit at corner in the team’s new scheme but could excel in more of a zone coverage role.

For now, the full rundown on Awuzie can be seen when looking at the cornerback position, but don’t be surprised to see him take some snaps here.
