Dallas Cowboys safeties: The Reserves

Donovan Wilson

The Cowboys added just one safety in the draft last season and it wasn’t until the sixth-round that they decided to do so. Their selection there was Texas A&M’s Donovan Wilson, who made fans almost instantaneously.

Wilson was a preseason star for Dallas, picking off three passes. The ability to create such turnovers has been absent in Big D for years, so fans were wanting to see Wilson make it to the field as a rookie.

The coaching staff remained patient, which was the right call, but Wilson did log some snaps as a rookie. He showed he has some room to grow but his instincts are impressive — as is his ability to punish the ball carrier.

Entering 2020, Wilson is in line to be one of the primary backups at a position that really doesn’t have a lot of depth.

Darian Thompson

A former third-round pick out of Boise State, Darian Thompson was a starter for the New York Giants by his second season —which was in 2017. However, he was gone the following year but landed with the Cowboys.

Last season, Thompson was called upon often and had to start four games for Dallas. He finished with 45 tackles and three pass defenses — while also notching 1.5 sacks.

Thompson is a solid rotational piece who can start in a pinch. Even if he doesn’t exactly wow anyone.
